New Year, New Resolution to Keep.

When I ask my friends and family about the yearly resolutions many will make today, they often scoff, saying "It's just another thing not to do" or "No one ever keeps them anyway."

In 2011, I resolved to stop biting my nails. It took until about May to really get into the habit, and now, two years later, I'm no longer a nail biter.

In 2012, I resolved to keep my house tidier on a daily basis. No sweat. My house stayed "mother-in-law" ready throughout the year and does to this day. We had a side resolution to (finally) renovate the kitchen -- completed November 19.

So this year, as I nurse my well-earned champagne hangover, I resolve to do what I always said I would not resolve on New Years -- join a gym and actually go -- the whole year.

I've broken my resolution into more realistically attainable goals by quarter:

Jan-March: Go at least 3x per week, attending two group fitness classes and one day of cardio/weights on my own

April-June: Go at least 4x per week, attending two group fitness classes and two days of cardio/weights on my own

July-Sept: Bumping up to 5x per week

Oct-Dec: maintaining that 5x per week pace and incorporating more yoga into my weekly workout

I know, it's easy to say one day in. So I've been researching and have found a few tools that I plan to use to aid in my mission:

1) Weight Watchers - worth every penny for the recipes alone, but the new 360 Spaces tools on the plan are helpful in making positive changes and decisions based on your daily environment. All food and activities are tracked on my iPhone or iPad, so no excuses. I'm also kicking it up a notch by wearing the ActiveLink, a small clip on device that measures your daily movements and activities.

2) Music - I'm one of those gals that needs to have on headphones if I'm working out. No running in silence for me. I found this great list of Pandora stations designed specifically for exercising:

Pandora has announced twelve new workout stations, aimed at people who want something to listen to while exercising. Here are the stations and some of the artists who feature on them:

80′s Cardio – Billy Idol, Michael Jackson, Journey.

Alternative Endurance Training – Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rise Against, Sublime.

Classic Rock Power Workout- AC/DC, Aerosmith, Queen.

Country Fitness – Keith Urban, Toby Keith, Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean.

Dance Cardio – Deadmau5, Tiesto, David Guetta.

Electronic Cardio – Daft Punk, Skrillex, Diplo.

Hard Rock Strength Training – Linkin Park, Three Days Grace, Disturbed.

Pop and Hip Hop Power Workout – Ke$ha, Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce.

Pop Fitness – Katy Perry, Maroon 5, Train.

Rap Strength Training – Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Eminem.

Yoga – Deep Forest, Deepak Chakra, Brian Eno.

Yoga Workout – Cheb I Sabbah, LTJ Bukem, J-Boogie’s Dubtronic Science.

So you all can curse me tomorrow as I'll be one of the many invading your gym and stealing your treadmills.

But I have to ask, what is your NewYear's Resolution?

We have had an awesome time this weekend with our great friends Kira and and Nat this weekend, who are visiting from the D.C. area.  While the boys started football round 1 (Redskins game), Kira and I headed west to Malta, Illinois to the Jonamac Orchard for apple picking. Talk about a great First Day of Fall activity. Chicago lent us a gorgeous 67 degree fall day. Ripe for the pocking were Early Fuji, Gala, Thompson, and apples. Based on their sweetness and our desire to bake pies this afternoon, we stuck to Early Fujis for baking, and some delicious Thompson apples for snacking at home. We though a peck of apples would do it for our dining purposes. We totally overestimated this. A peck got us 57 smallish apples. After making 3 deep pies, we still have 31 apples left over.  It was our first visit to Jonamac Prchard and it was pretty fabulous for a family day. In addition to a great store with gifts, jarred goodies, and kettle corn, there was a line 50 deep for their donuts. ...

Instant Pot Spaghetti and Meat Sauce

Raise your hand if you LOVE washing dishes? Yes? Then this recipe isn't for you. Because dinner is done in one pot. Set it and forget it while you change into something more comfortable after a long day. Ingredients: 1 lb. ground beef 1/2 onion, diced 2 c broth or water 3 c (24 ounces) pasta sauce (marinara or tomato sauce recommended) 1 lb. any pasta (I used whole wheat high protein spaghetti) 2 T Italian Seasoning 1 t Onion Powder 1 t Garlic Powder 1/2 t salt 1/4 t black pepper Instructions: Set your pot to "Saute" and cook the ground beef, breaking up with a wooden spoon as it cooks. Add the onion to the ground beef and they will cook together. Once it is cooked through (about 4-5 min), do not drain out the fat. **If you prefer to use frozen meatballs, skip the above steps, start with the meatballs in the bottom of your pot, then go from here:  Mix in all seasoning (Italian seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper) Layer in ...

Everyday Italian: White Bean and Tuna Salad

My cookbook quest continues, this time with Giada De Laurentis' Everyday Italian. I whipped up her White Bean and Tuna Salad to have on hand for lunch this week. This is an easy recipe with items you'll usually have on hand in your pantry. See my notes following the recipe to see other items you could add to this salad. 2 (6-ounce) cans of dark meat tuna, packed in oil. 1/2 t sea salt, plus more to taste 1/2 t freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste 2 (15-ounce cans cannellini beans, drained and rinsed 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced and diced 6 T red wine vinegar In a large bown, add the tuna with it's olive oil and 1/2 t of each salt and pepper. Using a fok, break up the tuna into bit-size pieces, then toss gently with the beans and onions. Drizzle the red wine vinegar and season with more salt and pepper to taste. Serve as it or over a bed of fresh arugula. Chef's Tips: If you can't find tuna packed in olive oil and are using tuna packed i...
